Appearance, your data, backups, sync, shortcuts and the AI assistant.

Appearance

Theme is remembered in this browser.

Language

Data

Everything lives in this browser's IndexedDB. Export regularly; there is no server copy.

Import

Bring in an Obsidian vault, or the issues you track in Linear or Jira. You see a preview before anything is written.

Linear: team → Export CSV. Jira: Issues → Export → CSV (all fields).

Storage

Whether this browser promises to keep Keel's data, and how much space it takes.

Automatic backups

A JSON copy of everything, written to a folder on a schedule while Keel is open.

This browser cannot write to a folder on its own. Use Export JSON above regularly, or open Keel in Chrome or Edge to enable automatic folder backups.

Sync across devices

Optional. Your own Supabase project holds an encrypted-in-transit copy; nothing is shared with anyone else.

Bring your own Supabase project. Keel stays local-first: this browser keeps working offline, and every change is merged with your other devices when they are online. When the same item changes on two devices, the newer edit wins and the other copy is kept for you to review; deletes travel too.

Stored in this browser only. The anon key is public by design; row-level security protects your rows.
One-time setup in Supabase
-- In your Supabase project: SQL editor → New query → paste supabase/schema.sql from the repo → Run.
-- Then Authentication → Providers → Email: enable, and add https://your-app/settings to the redirect URLs.

Sync conflicts

None. When a record changes on two devices between syncs, the newer edit wins and the other copy is kept here.

GitHub

Link pull requests and commits to issues, and let a merged PR close the issue.

Keel reads pull requests and commits from the repositories below and links them to issues by key: a branch feat/plat-12-audit, a PR titled PLAT-12 Audit log or a commit message mentioning PLAT-12. Public repositories need no token; private ones need a fine-grained token with read access to contents and pull requests. Everything runs in this browser.

Opened → in review, merged → done, stamped with GitHub's times.

Points and bonuses

How issues are sized, and how KPI scores turn into bonus suggestions.

The quick picks on every issue. Points lock when work starts and are earned when the issue is done; reopening takes them back.

Below this KPI score the bonus multiplier is zero; at it, half; at 100%, one; it rises to 1.5 at the cap.

How much of the multiplier follows the team's score rather than the person's. A larger team share keeps people helping each other.

  • From a score of% add% of earned points, called
  • From a score of% add% of earned points, called

When a person's KPI score reaches a tier, their scorecard suggests that many extra points as a bonus draft. Nothing is awarded until you approve it.

Why it works this way

Points measure size, not worth. Tied to pay, they invite inflated estimates and a race for big tickets, so Keel locks estimates when work starts, takes points back when work is reopened, gives most of the payout to the team, scores quality and delivery KPIs next to points, and keeps every award a reviewed draft with a written reason.

AI assistant

Optional. Nothing is sent anywhere until you ask it something.

AI assistant
Use any model: Claude, GPT, Gemini, open models through OpenRouter or Groq, or a model running on your own computer that works with no internet at all. Off until you set it up, and nothing is sent until you press send.

Claude models with tool use and extended thinking.

Get a key

Saved locally in this browser only, one key per provider. It is never written to the workspace database, so it stays out of exports and backups.

Type any model id the provider offers, or load the list. Billed to your key by the provider.

The relay forwards your key with each request and keeps nothing. Use direct if you would rather it never touched the server.

Sends one tiny request (a few tokens) with the model above.

What leaves your browser

Keel keeps everything in this browser. When you press send in the assistant, only the context listed in the panel goes to Anthropic: the workspace overview, the attached note or project, the vault excerpts matched to your question, and the conversation so far. Close the panel and nothing else is ever sent.

Self-hosting with one shared key

Operators can provide a key for everyone on their own instance by setting the provider's variable and the opt-in. The key alone is ignored, so a public deployment cannot spend the operator's credits by accident.

KEEL_ALLOW_SERVER_KEY=true
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=…   # or OPENAI_API_KEY, GEMINI_API_KEY,
                      # OPENROUTER_API_KEY, GROQ_API_KEY,
                      # MISTRAL_API_KEY, DEEPSEEK_API_KEY, XAI_API_KEY

Weekly digest

A note per week across all active projects, written on the day you choose.

Every week, the first time you open Keel on or after the chosen day, a digest note is written for all active projects: health, what shipped, what is next, risks and asks. Without an API key it is drafted from the facts alone; set up the assistant under AI assistant to have it written.

No digest yet

Semantic search

Optional, on-device. Search and the assistant find notes by meaning.

Find notes by meaning, not just words: “what blocked the release” finds the post-mortem that never uses the word blocked. The model runs in your browser; nothing leaves the device. Switching it on downloads the model once and indexes the vault in the background; the assistant and the search palette then use it.

Install as an app

Your own window, an icon, and it opens offline.

Keel installs like a native app: its own window, an icon in your dock or home screen, and it opens offline. Your data is already on this device; installing only changes how you launch it.

Use your browser's “Install app” or “Add to Home Screen” option; Chrome and Edge show a button here once the page qualifies.
